Breast cancer occurs when the healthy cells in the breasts mutate or go through abnormal changes, causing the cells to grow uncontrollably, and form a tumour. These cells can attack the nearby breast tissues and may spread to other parts of the body such as lymph nodes, lungs, bones, brain and liver. It is the most common cancer affecting women in Malaysia. This is usually due to the fact that most times, breast cancer does not cause any pain or discomfort until they spread to nearby tissues or has metastasized. Types of breast cancer may include angiosarcoma, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), inflammatory breast cancer, invasive lobular carcinoma, lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), male breast cancer, Paget’s disease of the breast, recurrent breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer.

As breast cancer usually does not present symptoms such as pain or discomfort until later stages, it is important to perform a simple Breast Self-Examination (BSE). Doctors and oncologists will use various screening or diagnosis tests to diagnose breast cancer. These include mammogram, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of breasts and breast biopsy (surgical biopsy, core-needle biopsy or fine-needle aspiration). When diagnosed with breast cancer, there are multiple treatment options that your doctor will consider for you. These include breast surgery (Lumpectomy, Mastectomy, Sentinel Node Biopsy, Axillary Lymph Node Dissection), Radiotherapy external beam radiation therapy – EBRT), Chemotherapy, Radiosurgery, Targeted Therapy and Hormone Therapy.
