Lung cancer occurs when the cells in the lungs start to mutate and divide abnormally, causing the cells to multiply uncontrollably, and eventually forming a tumour. This cancer starts in the lungs. It can attack the nearby tissues, and may spread to other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, bones, brain, liver or other organs in the body. According to Malaysia Global Cancer Observatory, lung cancer is the second most common cancer but with the highest death rate in Malaysia. This is due to the fact that lung cancer only presents symptoms and cause pain or discomfort until they spread to nearby tissues or has metastasized during later stages. Patients often seek out treatment late because of these. There are two types of lung cancer – non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

With early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer, the treatment prospects for lung cancer patients are higher. Doctors and oncologists will use various screening or diagnosis tests to diagnose lung cancer. These include blood tests, sputum cytology, imaging scans such as chest x-rays, low dose Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan, bone scans and thoracentesis, lung biopsy such as thoracoscopy or video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) biopsy, mediastinoscopy and mediastinotomy, percutaneous needle biopsy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and endoscopic oesophageal ultrasound (EUS). When diagnosed with lung cancer, there are multiple treatment options that your doctor will consider for you. These include lung surgery, Radiotherapy (external beam radiation therapy – EBRT), Chemotherapy, Immunotherapy and Targeted therapy.
