Prostate cancer occurs when the cells in the prostate gland start to mutate and divide abnormally, causing the cells to multiply uncontrollably, and eventually forming a tumour. It can attack the nearby tissues, and may spread and has metastasized to other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, bones, brain, liver or other organs in the body during its later stages. According to Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report 2007-2011, prostate cancer is the third common cancer among males in Malaysia. Most of the cases reported for prostate cancer are adenocarcinomas, which means the cells in the prostate glands begin growing out of control. There are also other less common types of prostate cancers such as small cell carcinomas, neuroendocrine tumours (other than small cell carcinomas), transitional cell carcinomas and sarcomas.

As prostate cancer may not present any signs or symptoms until the cancer is more advanced, it is vital to do screening tests regularly. Doctors and oncologists will use various screening or diagnosis tests to diagnose prostate cancer. These include prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, digital rectal examination (DRE), ultrasound, prostate biopsy, Computerized Tomography (CT) scan and Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan. When diagnosed with prostate cancer, there are multiple treatment options that your doctor will consider for you. These include surgery (radical prostatectomy), radiotherapy, chemotherapy, radiosurgery and targeted therapy such as radionuclide (Lutetium) therapy.
